Debunking the Myths and Disarming the Narcissist
in Mediation

(2 CLEs, 2 CEs Pending)

The term narcissism has become a veritable buzzword in our culture, popping up in conversations ubiquitously and in thousands of blogs, podcasts, and social media posts. As a result, another term seems to explode into our common lexicon: narcissistic abuse.

Sadly these popular terms are not always capturing the real issues that lurk in relational escalations and conflict, but are being readily assigned by partners to one another, causing a whole new maelstrom of challenges for mediators who are working to navigate separation and divorce agreements.

Indeed, emotional triggers often emerge when addressing a narcissist in our lives and in our work. Confronting them can trigger a sense of inadequacy, fear, ineffectiveness, and being overwhelmed.

Moderator:

Kevin Clark, Esq.

This can feel like choosing to walk into fire, a sure path to pain, which can cause disengagement. The instinct to avoid confrontation appears to be the most logical route to emotional survival. We also know that navigating confrontation is a necessary part of healthy human interaction and at the core of mediation work.

Wendy Behary will walk you through with hands-on, practical applications of how to “disarm the narcissist” in your mediation practice, using vignettes and demonstrations of effective strategies such as: empathic confrontation for collaboration, accountability, and limit-setting. You will learn how to deepen your understanding of narcissism, bypass obstacles, and maintain your leverage so that you can sustain a sturdy posture necessary for helping parties find optimal outcomes.
